How to change or reset the default printer driver settings (Windows)

RELATES TO:

  • Epson printer ranges: Colour Lasers, Mono Lasers, Inkjet Printers and All-In-Ones
  • Reset driver settings in Windows
  • Prints aren't correct e.g. blurry, faint, pixelated, banding/stripes in the print/image/photo, too much or not enough ink/toner

EXPLANATION:

The default printer driver settings for an A4 inkjet printer include A4 Paper Size, Plain Papers, Portrait orientation, and the Text print quality mode. For PictureMate printers, the default settings include a paper size of 4x6" (10x15 cm), Epson PictureMate photo paper, and a photo print quality.

You can change the default settings to your preference or revert back to the default settings by accessing the printer driver via the Printers folder.

To change the printer driver back to the default settings you should close any open applications and follow the procedure below.

  1. Click on the Start menu, then Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, open the printers folder. See the following article if you require further help with this step: How to open the Printers or Printers and Faxes folder in Windows
  3. In the printers folder, open the printer driver. Follow the section appropriate to your operating system:
    • Windows 95, 98, and ME: Right-click your Epson printer icon then from the menu, left-click on Properties.
    • Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7 and 8: Right-click your Epson printer icon then from the menu, left-click on Printing Preferences.
  4. Follow the section appropriate to your printer type to change the settings in the driver:

Inkjet and Larage Format printers

  1. Start in the Main tab of the printer driver.
  2. Click on the Reset Defaults button located in the bottom-left of the window.

  3. Click OK to save any changes as the new default driver settings.
    • The Apply button will remain greyed-out, the OK button will save the changes.

  • For some printers, you will have the following Epson driver tabs:

    Main | Paper | Layout | Utility

There isn't a 'Default' button in this style of driver. If your printer driver does not have a 'Default' button, you can do the following:

    1. Click on any of the tabs to check the settings and change them as necessary.
    2. Click OK to save any changes as the new default driver settings.
      • The Apply button will remain greyed-out, the OK button will save the changes.

Laser printers

  1. Click on the Default button found at the bottom of the Basic Settings tab in the driver:

  2. Click OK to save any changes as the new default driver settings.
    • The Apply button will remain greyed-out, the OK button will save the changes.

PictureMate printers

PictureMate drivers do not have a 'Default' button, so you must do the following:

  1. Check the settings on the Main tab and change them if necessary.
  2. Click OK to save any changes as the new default driver settings.
    • The Apply button will remain greyed-out, the OK button will save the changes.

  • The printer driver will now be restored to the default settings, or set to the changes you have made.
    Notes Icon Note:

Any changes made in this manner i.e. entering the Properties via the printers folder, will be saved as the default settings unless changed.

Any changes made in the printer Properties / Printing Preferences via an application you are printing from will be for that print job only or only for that session in the application. Subsequent prints will use the default printer driver settings unless these are changed again.
